100% organic feed for pigs and poultry is it possible?

Report and technical guides on feeding pigs and poultry organically available

A key challenge in improving the sustainability of organic pig and poultry (monogastric) production is meeting the required levels of nutrients from locally sourced organic feeds. From December 2017 all producers will be required to feed monogastric animals a 100 % organic diet. There is, therefore, a need to explore and evaluate the practical possibilities in doing that from a production and animal welfare point of view. Over the last three years, ORC has been working with FAI in England, and with 10 other partners across Europe, as part of the Improved Contribution of Local Feed to Support 100% Organic Feed Supply to Pigs and Poultry (ICOPP) project to investigate economically viable feeding strategies based on 100% organic feed to supply the required level of nutrients in different phases of production and support high animal health and welfare. A range of feeding experiments were carried out with pigs (sows, piglets and finishers) and poultry (layers and broilers) focused on concentrate feedstuffs, roughage, and foraging from the range. In addition, three crosscutting activities have supported the overall interpretation; these worked on availability of relevant feeds across Europe, comparable information on feeding values of new feed stuffs for practical planning, and economic and environmental assessment of new strategies.
